Stories surrounding mold infestations in properties appears to be more prevalent these days. Hitherto, there have been several stories surrounding mold issues in both residential properties and commercial properties; from articles regarding one of the LAPD stations to elementary schools with mold issues.
Recently, an article featured on the ABC 7 News website was featured an Indoor Air Quality Association publication (we are privy to these articles due to our membership to this association). In the article, one of the reporters from ABC 7 delved into the health affects of mold, as she consulted with Dr. Karen Schafer of the Lawton Community Health Center.
In the featured article, Dr. Schafer discloses some of the more innocuous ways in which mold can develop, such as with "triple digit temperatures and humidity". This is why, as certified inspectors, we always measure the relative humidity inside properties we inspect to deduce if there is a naturally occurring source for mold growth. Dr. Schafer goes on to discuss how the most common symptoms of mold exposure are upper respiratory issues-with those who suffer from asthma being more susceptible,
"Meaning sinusitis, recurring sinusitis or allergic reactions, asthma can be flared so if you are usually under good control and now that it is harder to control you are having to take more of your inhaler use there is sometimes a hyper sensitivity luminous which means lungs so an inflammation of the lungs reacting to that and that would be a chronic cough or chronic shortness of breath," -Dr. Schafer.
